Welcome to IWEMM12 in Teruel (Spain)

We are pleased to announce the 12th International Workshop on Edible Mycorrhizal Mushrooms (IWEMM12), which will take place from 12 to 17 April 2027 in the province of Teruel (Spain). This edition is organised under the theme “Edible mycorrhizal mushrooms: Sustaining Forests, Offering Opportunities”, highlighting the essential role of edible mycorrhizal fungi in forest conservation, territorial resilience, and the socio‑economic revitalisation of rural areas.

Teruel offers IWEMM12 a unique blend of Mudejar heritage, truffle culture, and remarkable mountain landscapes.
Teruel welcomes IWEMM12 with quiet heritage, natural landscapes, and a deep connection to forests and fungi.

Its ecosystem of research institutions, companies, nurseries, irrigation communities and sectoral organisations integrates scientific knowledge with local expertise, contributing decisively to the professionalisation and international recognition of the truffle value chain.

Teruel also stands out for its dynamic and innovative business environment linked to truffle production and for the growing development of truffle tourism, which has become a distinctive element of its territorial identity and an emerging driver of rural development.

The province also plays an active role in the Fungi Friendly Forest (FFF) Network, an international initiative for the sustainable management of mycological territories driven by the European Mycological Institute (EMI).

Program

IWEMM12 offers a distinctive program that combines science, field experience, innovation, cultural heritage, and rural development. The workshop will provide an international forum to advance knowledge, share applied experiences, and strengthen the role of edible mycorrhizal mushrooms as key resources for biodiversity conservation, sustainable land management, gastronomy, and local economies.

The IWEMM12 program will be structured around six major sessions:

Field Visits to the Teruel Truffle Experiential Park and to the Albarracín Mycological Park

The Field Visits will allow IWEMM12 participants to explore the mycological and truffle landscapes of Teruel through direct contact with parks, plantations, research sites, restaurants, agri-food companies, museums, and local communities.

Post‑Conference Tour: A Journey Through the EMI’s Mycological Territories
